Based on conversations over at our Goals for the Future of Chicago Theater postings, it seems that there is a growing interest among the small-to-midsize Chicago theater community in working together.

So rather than continue going in circles saying, “We should…” The New Colony is offering to organize an initial round table amongst theater companies in Chicago who would be interested in exploring a coalition. The goal behind this “union” (not in the big bad “let’s go on strike!” way) would be to support and promote Chicago’s smaller, independent theater scene the same way that Broadway in Chicago does for, well, Broadway shows in Chicago.

If your company is interested in participating in this round table (dates to be determined based on schedules of those interested), please email our Artistic Director Andrew Hobgood.

If you know of companies that may be interested in this round table, please email them, Facebook it, post this on your blog, or tweet this entry.

I love this conversation, I love big goals and I love Chicago theatre.

While we certainly understand the need for folks who share certain ideals and ways of making theatre to form their own coalition, the League stands ready to offer our services, our resources and our might to this effort. We are much more than cheap tickets and a list on a website. Your goals are our goals, that’s why we’re here.

You might be interested in this paper, which I presented in part at the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs conference in DC in the summer. In researching for the paper, I was surprised to discover that Chicago “doesn’t have a cultural plan for theater.” I figured that one must exist but doesn’t.

The kinds of issues that concern you are what I suggest concern all artistic disciplines.
